Exploring the Anatomy of a Letter [Infographic]
We see words and read text everyday — any of you design nerds ever wonder what makes up the anatomy of a letter?
There is a standard set of terms to describe the parts of a character. These terms, and the parts of the letter they represent, are often referred to as “letter anatomy” and what a typeface designer explores when creating a typeface. By breaking down letters into parts, a designer can better understand how type is created and altered and how to use it effectively.
Back when I was doing research on typefaces and fonts and the differences between serif and sans serif typefaces, I came across a lot of discussion on this topic. It gave me the idea to create a fun visual representation of the process. Wind your way through our infographic to explore the anatomy of a letter!
